The tipping culture has gotten out of hand even for those of us who are American & Canadian! Some of it has to do with the digital/mobile point-of-sale systems that everyone moved to. The tip screen is a default setting, even in places where it makes zero sense at all. I hope this problem doesn’t migrate to Europe.
I feel that in Europe the customer is still pretty much in control on whether to tip or not and if yes, how much -although to varying degrees: In fact, in some countries (like Germany), a tip is more expected than in others (like Italy).
From our experiences, people in Europe expect it less in Europe, or rounding to a near 'nice' number (60, 65, etc) is generally accepted instead of the 'mandatory' 18%!

Yeah we also think the PoS systems played a big part in the shift, since suddenly everybody can now ask for a tip, even when its not 'necessary'!
